For three of the books, it has a title page, date, and no content. You get the first two or three books, but then, for example, “The Scandal of Father Brown” is one blank page long. I honestly would be less bothered if they’d left the book out completely, but just including a title page and no book feels scammy as well as shoddy. I thought GK Chesterton was an old male member of the literary pantheon but some comment on his books somewhere included a photo of a contemporary looking woman with the strong presumption that this was a photo of the author. I don't think the photo was of JK Rowling either but it looked more like her than like GK Chesterton. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2020 )

Numerous racist references by the author reminds you of the bygone prejudicial, class conscious era in which these stories are staged. Many of the criminal solutions deduced by Father Brown are so obscure in nature that you must abandon any realistic expectations. The volume is a mixed bag. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from bam -- A great deal of philosophising : I enjoyed the first half of this book. I had read only one father Brown story before, so there was a great deal of novelty to absorb. However, the plots eventually began to become repetitious and much less interesting. The author's constant philosophising, something rarely found in crime stories, that had at first seemed so intellectual, also lost its flavor, becoming simply incoherent. The humble, self-effacing Father Brown was often able to solve crimes by comprehending motives and the inner lives of victims and perpetrators through interpreting tiny details overlooked by others, a method that is most sensible and understandable. At other times, however, he somehow acquired information or insight mysteriously, leaving the reader to wonder how in the world he reached his conclusions, which were unfailingly correct. Less confusing philosophising and more attention to how Father Brown was so remarkably successful would have improved the narratives. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2020 )

Finding some of them hard going as they're shorter and deeper than the more recent murder mysteries I've read and the TV series. The language is quite erudite which I love as I think we're in danger of losing good English and I discovered a dictionary for the more obscure words at base of page. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Pete The Heep -- Not the quaint character of the TV series : A complete collection of the short stories. You have to be prepared for the racist and anti-semitic and pro Roman Catholic/ ecclesiastical views of the characters/author. He is not afraid to drop in the N word when describing black people and Jew is generally used in a derogatory manner. The stories don't all take place in a quaint Midlands village and it's never quite understood how a parish priest manages to get to so many places to solve crimes. The short stories themselves are of a reasonable length to pass the odd hour. I always got the feeling though that the ending had been written before the rest of the plot and a lot of the logic behind the deduction was ignored and Father Brown just had the answer.
